Understanding Classical Chess Rankings

Classical chess, also known as standard chess, is the traditional format played at the highest level with long time controls of 90 minutes or more per player. The FIDE classical rating is considered the most prestigious measure of a chess player's strength. Players like Magnus Carlsen, who reached a peak rating of 2882, have defined the modern era of classical chess.

The 2700 Club

Players rated above 2700 in classical chess are known as “Super Grandmasters.” Only about 30-40 players in the world maintain this elite status at any given time. Reaching 2700 is a significant milestone that places a player among the absolute best in chess history.

How Classical Ratings Work

FIDE calculates classical ratings using the Elo rating system. A player's rating changes based on game results relative to their opponents' ratings. A K-factor determines how much each game impacts the rating. New players have a K-factor of 40, while established players use K=20, and those who have reached 2400+ use K=10.
